Chapter 19

Venne couldn’t help but notice what a striking couple Rex and Tori made as she crossed her marble foyer to greet her guests. Well, Rex looked horrid, truthfully, with his shaggy face and hair grown out for that role, and his lady of choice really was wearing a sunhat despite being indoors, but from what she could see, they looked good together. Damned good.

Again Venne focused on that hat, the way Tori kept her head oddly tipped as she looked around with slack-jawed wonder. She stifled her comments. One thing Venne knew was that rich people flaunted their eccentricity, so perhaps this wildlife worker made a lot more dough than she let on.

Venne stepped close and gave Rex a hug, calling him “Ford, darling,” to show she remembered. He returned her warm embrace and then turned to introduce Tori.

Then he stopped when he saw Tori’s expression.

Tori’s eyes were wide, her mouth dangled open, and her arms hung limply at her sides. Rex obviously tried not to smile. Venne knew she was a great actress, but Rex made quintuple what she did last year, yet Tori was star-struck over her? It made her grin.

Rex said, “Kevenne, I’d like you to meet Tori Jackson, the eco-toxicologist I told you about. Tori, this is—”

“Ohmigod you’re Kevenne!” Now Tori’s hands flew to her face, leaving her eyes free to peek out. “Ohmigod ohmigod I can’t believe it! I thought he was saying Vivienne, not Kevenne, so I wasn’t really paying attention and—”

Venne turned a smooth gaze on Rex and said, “Guess you didn’t tell her?”

“What’s to tell?” he teased, so Venne jabbed him hard in the shoulder.

Tori still alternated between babbling and being at a loss of words, so Rex claimed her hand and said, “Tori?”

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. It’s just... you have no idea... I...”

“I think we do,” he smiled.

“No,” Tori said and pulled away to face Venne. Well, mostly faced her. Venne noticed Tori still kept her head turned slightly away from her as she said, “You see, your movie, Cursed Love, got me through the worst ordeal of my life.”

Now Venne perked up. “Really? That was my first movie, and it tanked at the office.”

But Tori vehemently shook her head. “I had it on DVD, and when I was in the hospital recovering, I played that over and over. Oh my God, I cried so hard during that movie. And when Granny made your fiancé break up with you over that old family feud, it was just what had happened to me. Your expression... oh my God, I felt the whole world of hurt in your eyes.”

Venne sent Rex her smuggest look. “Well, it looks like somebody recognizes great acting when she sees it.”

He smirked, making Venne laugh.

Tori obviously sensed something was up, because she frowned and looked back and forth between the two of them, her head still cocked.

Venne reached out, stopped and asked, “May I?” Despite Tori’s balk, Venne flipped up the brim and saw the scars.
